Baseball Can't Complete Sweep As Cal Poly Secures, 6-4, Come-From-Behind Victory

Riverside--The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking for its first series sweep Sunday after taking the first two games of a three-game Big West Conference series against Cal Poly, but the Mustangs came back from a 3-0 deficit to secure a 6-4 victory.

The Highlanders (24-28, 10-11) honored their six seniors prior to Sunday's game, but it was a trio of underclassmen at the top of the order who helped UCR build a 3-0 lead through five innings. Austin Colvin, Mark Contreras and Vince Fernandez combined to go eight for 15 on the day with two runs scored and four RBIs.

Angel Landazuri had a shutout through five, but in the top of the sixth, he gave up a pair of singles to put runners on the corners. With his pitch count at 95, Coach Percival turned to reliever Keaton Leach. Although Leach did not allow a batter to reach base, both inherited runners scored thanks to an error and an RBI ground out. The error was one of five that the Highlanders committed on the day which led to three unearned runs.

The Mustangs plated two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh to go up 4-3, but Fernandez drilled a solo shot to left in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at four.

Cal Poly (30-24, 10-11) retook the lead in the top of the eighth scoring a run off of relief pitcher Cameron Haskell (0-3), and added an insurance run in the ninth off of Ryan Lillie.

Justin Calomeni (5-2) was credited with the win as he pitched 5.1 innings in relief of starter Jarred Zill.

The Highlanders conclude the 2016 regular season this week with a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara.
