Bakersfield—The UC Riverside Volleyball team concluded its non-conference schedule with a 3-2 victory over San Francisco in the Roadrunner Classic Saturday.
The Highlanders dropped the opening set by a score 25-22 to the Dons, who hit .333 in the set and got eight kills from Tyna Adamcikova.
In the second, the UCR block took effect limiting USF to just .184 hitting and registering 3.5 blocks in the frame. The Highlanders hit .344 led by Brooke Callahan's five kills and three apiece from Meg Graham and Cristina Maietta en route to the 25-19 second set victory to even the match.
The third set saw the Highlanders jump out to an 18-8 advantage. The Dons responded by winning six of nine points to cut the UCR margin to seven at 21-14. Setter Chelsea Doyle then had the last of her four kills in the set, which was followed by kills from Mickayla Sherman and Graham that set the stage for Maietta's set-clinching service ace for the, 25-14, third set victory.
USF opened the fourth on a 6-1 run and carried that momentum to a 20-10 lead. The Highlanders would cut the margin in half, but were unable to hold off the Dons from forcing a fifth set by way of a 25-20 fourth set victory.
In the decisive fifth set, UCR was leading 11-7, when USF called timeout. The Dons responded by taking four out of five points to cut the deficit to one at 12-11. The teams traded points and the set was tied at 13,14,15,16 and 17.
With the match tied at 17, Graham smashed her 10
th kill of the match on Doyle's 50th assist to set-up match point. In the rally at 18-17, Adamcikova rose to attempt her 23
rd kill of the match, but Graham challenged her at the net forcing her into an attack error, which clinched the set 19-17 and the match 3-2 for the Highlanders.
Saturday's five-set victory was UCR's first of the season, and the second five set match in as many days. Another first for the Highlanders this season was having four players finish a match with double-digit kills—Callahan 15, Sherman 14, Maietta 13 and Graham 10.
Doyle hit the 50 assist plateau for the second time this season and added 16 digs, as did Maietta. Maddie Hubbell, Angela Gonzalez and Frances Camandang each chipped in on the defensive effort with 11 digs.
Graham was named to the Roadrunner Classic All-Tournament Team, after compiling 10 blocks and 27 kills, while hitting .355 over three matches.
The Highlanders will begin BIg West Conference play on the road Saturday, September 24
