Men's Tennis Blanks Hope International, 7-0, For First Win Of 2017, Falls 5-2 To Nevada

Riverside-The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team picked up their first victory of the season, 7-0, over Hope International in the first match of the double-header Wednesday, before falling to Nevada, 5-2, in the afternoon match.

The Highlanders won the doubles point by taking the first two matches. Cooper Bridge and Nabil Abdallah outlasted Hope's Rae/Ancheta 7-5, and the pairing over Andeson Ju and Jack Felich outpointed the Royals' Romero/Bazertti, 6-3.

In singles play, UCR swept all five matches played and surrendered no more than two games in any set played. Newcomers Max Cohen, and Olivier Kigotho earned their first singles victories as members of the Highlanders.

"Feels good to get our first win.We started a little slow, but picked it up in singles." said Coach Johansson.

In the second match of the day on the SRC courts, UCR fell 5-2 to Nevada. 

The Highlanders took two out of three double matches to earn the point, before dropping five of six singles matches. Freshman Gilbert Chung pulled out the lone victory for UCR in line four singles play 6-4, 7-5 over Kostya Nesterenko.

Coach Johansson on the loss to the Wolfpack; "Good aggressive doubles play versus a strong Nevada team. Nice to see Gilbert get a win at #4. Andy fought hard to extend his match and even had a few chances to win."

The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team will head to Los Angeles to take USC Saturday at 10 am.
