Long Beach–The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team continues on into the second game of a stretch that will see them play four of five away from the SRC Arena with a Saturday afternoon tilt versus Big West leading Long Beach State in a tip slated for 4 pm PT.
The Highlanders were knocked off, 72-55, at UC Davis Thursday night. In the loss, they were plagued by a cold-shooting third period in which they shot 2-18, and were outscored 26-4 by the Aggies. Â
Rejane Verin had her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead three UCR players in double-digits. She will enter Saturday's showdown leading the conference in scoring (16.7 ppg) and second in both rebounding (8.0 rpg) and assists (4.4 apg).
The Highlanders did get double figures from Simone DeCoud (10) and Lauren Holt (11) in the same game for the first time on four games. DeCoud and Holt are averaging 12.1 and 11.3 points for the season respectively.
The 72 points allowed to Davis was the most allowed to any Big West school faced thus far, as no other foe had tallied more than 59 in the five games prior. Their 58.3 points allowed per game during league play is the second-lowest in the conference.
Despite dishing out just 10 assists to 14 turnovers last game, UCR is second the conference with 17.7 assists per game versus Big West competition.
Long Beach State sits atop the Big West standings at 5-1, after winning, 65-48, at Cal State Fullerton. Jessica Gertz led the 49ers with 18 points on six made three-pointer in the victory.
On the season, LBSU has five players averaging between 8.1 and 10.5 points a game. Madison Montgomery averages the team-leading 10.5, while Raven Benton and Jewelyn Sawyer each score 9.8 per contest.
The 49ers have forced their conference opponents into 17.2 turnovers a game, which ties them with UCR for the league lead.
In addition spreading the scoring around, Long Beach also distributes the minutes, as they have eight players logging 15 or more minutes a game. Point guard Anna Kim averages a team-high 26.4 minutes a game, and directs the scoring attack (3.5 ast/g). Â
UCR swept last season's series, and prevailed 83-58 in the last match-up between the clubs at the SRC Arena in 2016.
