Highlander Health Fair Helps Student-Athletes Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle For Life

Riverside—The UC Riverside Sports Medicine Department hosted its fourth annual Highlander Health Fair this month, educating UCR's 300-plus student-athletes in a variety of health-related areas that will benefit them long past their playing days.

Covering alcohol, tobacco and other drugs (ATOD), as well as personal, physical and mental wellness, the health fair is a partnership between athletics and numerous on-campus entities, each of which offers assistance to the entirety of the UC Riverside student body.

"This was our most successful Highlander Health Fair to date in terms of both the number of attendees we had attend, as well as the number of campus organizations who presented at the event." said UC Riverside's Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine and Performance Tony Ontiveros. "As important as our student-athletes' health is to their success on the playing fields, it is equally important that they carry the lessons learned during their collegiate years well into adulthood.

"Exposing them to all of the health resources available on our campus, and letting them know that it is acceptable to seek help in these areas, goes a long way to helping us achieve those goals."
