Women's Basketball Falls 89-66 At Iowa State

Ames, IA—The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (3-8) had a season-high four players score in double-figures for the second straight game, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders fell 89-66 at Iowa State (5-5).
KEY RUNS
The Cyclones took their first double-digit lead of the game courtesy of a 14-4 run midway through the second, taking a 31-19 advantage at the 6:40 mark. The Highlanders answered with an 11-3 run of their own, cutting it to 34-30, but Iowa State pushed the lead back to double-figures at 43-32 heading into halftime.
The Highlanders opened the third quarter hitting six of their first eight shot attempts, cutting the deficit to seven on multiple occasions. However, they were unable to get the lead under seven points the rest of the way.
GAME NOTES
Redshirt sophomore guard Jannon Otto finished just a point shy of a career-high, scoring a team-high 16 points on 7-of-13 (.538) from the field and 2-of-4 (.500) from deep. Otto rounded out her statline with seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.
UC Riverside set a new season-high with seven three-pointers (7-19 3FG) as a team. Three of those came from Lauren Holt, who had yet to hit more than two threes in a game this season prior to Sunday.
Holt—who finished with 14 points—has now made a triple in eight straight games. In six of UCR's 11 games this season, she has made at least two three-pointers.
The Highlanders were without leading scorer Michelle Curry for the entire second half, after the senior started the game despite not being at 100 percent. Curry finished with three points in 12 first half minutes, putting her just five shy of reaching 1,000 career points.
Forwards Skyler Lewis and Marina Ewodo scored 12 points apiece, grabbing eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Lewis also had two blocks, while Ewodo pitched in with one of her own.
Ewodo—whose 12 points set a new career-high—has now scored in double-figures in back-to-back games. Her team-leading four assists also tied a career-best.
UCR finished with 47 rebounds, good for its second highest rebounding total this season. The Highlanders' +7 rebounding margin was also their second-best mark of the year.
UC Riverside went just 5-for-7 (.714) from the free throw line, compared to 17-for-23 (.739) for the Cyclones.
The Highlanders will play the second of three straight on the road this Tuesday at South Dakota.
