Tempe, AZ—Facing one of the Pac-12's top defenses in Arizona State (7-2) on Sunday, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (2-7) struggled with its shot, falling to the Sun Devils 73-48 in the ASU Classic Championship Game. Senior guard Michelle Curry was named to the All-Tournament Team, leading the way with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
KEY RUN
Already leading 15-9 midway through the first, the Sun Devils embarked on a 15-0 run into the second, pushing the lead to 30-9. UC Riverside answered with a 9-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 12 points, but that was the closest the Highlanders would get the rest of the way.
GAME NOTES
Michelle Curry closed out the weekend averaging 21.5 points, nine assists and six rebounds per game on an efficient .519 (14-27 FG) shooting mark. She scored or assisted on more than two-thirds (.688) of UCR's 11 field goals against the Sun Devils. Curry has now scored 15 or more points in six of her last seven outings.
Lauren Holt scored 16 points on 6-of-14 (.429) shooting, knocking down a pair of triples. She has made ten of the Highlanders' 19 three-pointers over their last six games, making at least one three in each.
Skyler Lewis just missed out on another double-double, finishing with eight points and 10 rebounds. Lewis also added three assists for the third straight game to go along with two blocks.
One day after posting some of its most efficient shooting numbers in program history, UC Riverside came out cold against ASU. The Highlanders made 6-of-30 (.200) field goal attempts in the first half before heading into the break down 38-20.
The Highlanders allowed the Sun Devils to go just 6-of-8 at the line, setting new opponent season-lows in free throw makes and attempts.
This was the final game of UC Riverside's season-long seven game road trip. The Highlanders will return home to the SRC Arena this Wednesday where they will face CSU Bakersfield at 11 am PT.
