Tempe, AZ–Maddy RIchard went 2-3, scored a run and stole a base in the UC Riverside Softball Team's 11-2 loss to San Jose State at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday.
The Highlanders got on the board in the second inning, when Hannah Rodriguez doubled to left field, and later came in on passed ball to make to put UCR ahead, 1-0. In the third, Richard had an infield single with one out, before stealing second and coming in after pushed around the bases by three straight walks.
In the San Jose bottom half of the third, the Spartans erupted for four runs including a bases clearing 3-run double. After the Highlanders failed to get a hit in the top of the fifth, San Jose State plated seven runs on six hits to end the game via the mercy rule 11-2 in the fifth.
UC Riverside will complete the 2017 Kajikawa Classic with a pair of games Sunday: 8 am PT against New Mexico State, and 10:45 am PT versus host ASU.
