Men's Tennis Picks Up Two Victories To Start Spring Break Trip

Greensboro, NC-The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team notched two more wins on the year by knocking off Guilford and North Carolina A&T to start off their 2017 Spring Break Trip.
 
The Highlanders started off the day off in dominating fashion by beating Guilford 9-0. Guilford college is a division III affiliate of the NCAA. Since they were the home team the match was played under D III rules.
 
UCR won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Kyle McCann and Max Cohen got things started by winning their match at no. 3 doubles 8-2. Cooper Bridge and Andy Ju followed suit defeating their opponents 8-1 on the no. 2 court, while Nabil Abdallah and Tadi Landsky prevailed 8-5 at the top spot.

In singles play UCR kept the strong performance going by sweeping the singles matches, all in straight sets. Cooper Bridge won his line one singles match 6-2, 6-0 to give him a team leading 11 singles wins. Abdallah was next up winning his match at line four in dominating fashion 6-0, 6-0.

Andy Ju matched Abdallah at line six with his own 6-0, 6-0 performance. Gilbert Chung won his match at position five  6-3, 6-0, followed by Kyle McCann at line two 6-0, 6-4. The last match played was a 6-4, 6-0 victory for Tadi Lansky at line three.
 
Head Coach Mattias Johansson on the match, "Good start on a long road trip. Everyone played rather well after 24 hours of travel. Nice job by Nabil Abdallah on clinching the match for us."
 
On the second match of the day, the Highlanders defeated the North Carolina A&T Bulldogs by a score of 5-2.
 
The Highlanders won the doubles point by taking the matches on court no. 2 and no. 3. Cohen and McCann won their match 6-2 at the no. 3 spot, while Bridge and Chung clinched the point for UCR by prevailing 6-2 at the no. 2 match.
 
In singles action the Highlanders won four out of the six singles matches. Bridge extended the lead by defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-3 at the no. 1 spot. Chung won his match 6-0, 7-6 at the no. 5 spot to put the Highlanders are up 3-0.

Ju clinched the match for UCR winning his match at line six 6-4, 6-3. North Carolina A&T the won the 2 out of 3 remaining singles matches to make the final score 5-2. The last point for the Highlanders came from Kyle McCann, who he won his match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the no. 2 spot.
 
Coach Johansson on the match, "Second match of the day we came out pretty hot in doubles which has been an issue for most of the season, so that was great to see. After securing the match, we lost a few tough matches at #3 and #4, but the guys competed well and today we did not need these guys to win. First time of the season that we are at .500 record after starting the season 1-7."
 
The Highlanders continue their trip when the return to the court at 12pm Tuesday against Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC.
