Honolulu, HI–The UC Riverside Softball Team limited Hawai'i to just four hits, but fell, 2-0, in the series opener Friday night.
The Highlanders got a pair of singles from Maddy Richard and Jenna Curtan in the top of the first, but they were left stranded.
UC Riverside (20-16, 2-5) starter Haley Marschall allowed a pair of singles in the top of the second, an inning extended by a pair of errors, which resulted in the Rainbow Wahine plating the game's first run.
Jenae Lockwood had a single up o the middle to lead off the second, however was erased in a double play ending the UCR threat.
To start the fourth, Curtan laced a single to left for her second hit of the night, and the fourth and final hit the Highlanders would get off of Hawai'i (24-14, 3-4) starter Brittany Hitchcock.
In the home half of the fourth, Angelique Ramos homered to center field to put the Rainbow Wahine ahead 2-0. Marschall would face two more hitters before giving way to Tayler Misfeldt. Misfeldt pitched a hitless two and two-thirds innings in finishing out the game for the Highlanders.
The UCR bats struggled to solve Hitchcock as she went the distance en route to a complete-game four-hit shutout victory. The win moved her record to 15-7 on the year, while Marschall fell to 6-6 with the loss.
The clubs will finish out the series in a double-header Saturday beginning at 5 pm PT.
