Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team fell behind early Sunday afternoon, and never quite recovered as CSUN swept the three-game Big West Conference series with a 10-3 victory.
The Highlanders (13-22, 2-10) used a little small ball to plate the first run of the game, as Mark Contreras singled up the middle with one out, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Michael Farris sac fly.
The lead didn't last long, however, as UC Riverside starter Kevin West (0-1) was unable to make it out of the bottom of the first. The Matadors (20-21, 7-5) touched him for two hits, three walks, and five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Ricky Delgado got the final out of the frame, but not before walking three, throwing a wild pitch, and allowing an infield single, to give CSUN a 6-1 advantage.
The Matadors scored another run in the second, but the Highlanders scratched back for two in the top of the third. Once again, Contreras and Farris were in the middle of things. Colby Schultz laced a one out double down the right field line, and Contreras brought him home with a single up the middle. A balk moved Contreras up 90 feet, and Farris singled to right field, cutting the lead to four, 7-3.
CSUN scored single runs in the third, fifth and eighth as the Highlanders used six pitchers on the day.
Samuel Myers (3-5) pitched a complete-game, five-hitter for the Matadors, while striking out 11, and walking just one.
UC Riverside remains on the road this week, traveling to San Diego State for a Tuesday, April 25 meeting with the Aztecs. First pitch is slated for 6 pm PT.
