Davis, CA—The UC Riverside and UC Davis Baseball Teams went toe-to-toe for seven innings Saturday afternoon, but the Aggies (17-25, 9-11) got to the Highlanders (18-28, 4-13) in the eighth, plating the only two runs they would need in a 2-0 victory.
UC Riverside's Alex Fagalde (6-4) and UC Davis' Justin Mullins (3-3) matched each other pitch for pitch for most of the gay, with both hurlers allowing just three hits through seven innings of work.
Mullins worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the eighth, but Fagalde wasn't so fortunate in the bottom half.
After retiring Alex Aguilar for the first out of the inning, Fagalde gave up a double down the left field line to Jacob Thomas. An intentional walk to Cameron Olson put runners at first and second, and Fagalde allowed an RBI single off the bat of Ryan Anderson to put the Aggies up, 1-0.
Matt Hardy came on in relief of Fagalde, and Ignacio Diaz greeted him with an RBI single to left. Nick Shur took over on the mound after that, and recorded the final two outs, but the damage was already done.
Mullins got Michael Farris to fly out to right for the first out of the top of the ninth. After issuing a walk to Yeager Taylor, Mullins was lifted in favor of Zach Stone. Stone struck out Cody Sporrer for out number two, and ended the game by getting Cade Peters to ground out to first.
The Highlanders and Aggies complete their three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
