Santa Barbara, CA–The UC Riverside Men's Golf fell back to eighth in the Big West Championship after a team 12-over par 300 on day two at Sandpiper Golf Club.
The Highlanders were lead by Sam Gillis and Michael Wong, who shot matching two-over par 74s.
Gillis made four birdies on the final five holes of his front nine to make the turn at -2. Following a spectacular par save at the 10th, Gillis then made a triple bogey six at the par 3 11th. After a bogey on no. 13, he made five straight pars coming in to finish at +2 in a tie for 25th.
Wong shaved five strokes off his round one total with a two-over 74 in a second round that saw him make birdies early in the round at the third and at the par 5 fifth.
Matt Lutz holds the top position on the team in a tie for 20th at +1 after his three-over 75.
The team has been plagued by its play at the par 3 11th. A 228 yard elevated tee shot into a green just a few yards from the ocean. Of the ten times UCR has played the signature hole, only once has a member of them team made par, senior Pachara Sakulyong in today's second round.
Tournament host UC Santa Barbara shot a team nine-under par 279 to create a six-shot margin over second place Cal Poly, and eight over CSUN and Long Beach State tied for third.
The Matadors Felix Mory (-8) holds the overnight lead after a second straight four-under par 68. He leads by a shot over LBSU's Joe Fryer (-7), who shot a 66 in round two.
UC Riverside will tee off at 7:30 am in tomorrow;s final round off hole no. 10 alongside Hawai'i and UC Davis. (Day three pairings)
