San Luis Obispo, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was held scoreless for the second straight game, Friday, as Cal Poly shutout the Highlanders, 5-0.
Spencer Howard (8-1) scattered seven hits over 7.1 innings for the Mustangs (28-27, 16-7), striking out 10, and walking one. Michael Clark pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his 11th save of the year.
The Cal Poly offense gave Howard all the run support he would need in the bottom of the second, courtesy of back-to-back homers off the bats of Michael Sanderson and Nick Meyer.
UC Riverside (21-32, 7-16) starter Ryan Lillie (2-7) allowed just two hits in the third through sixth innings to keep things close. However, Cal Poly loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with three consecutive singles, and an RBI ground out made it 3-0 Mustangs.
Jared Morton recorded the final out of the inning for the Highlanders, but Cal Poly touched him for three hits and two runs in the bottom of the eighth to go up by five.
UC Riverside and the Mustangs play the final regular season game of the year for both clubs on Saturday beginning at 1 pm PT.
