SAN DIEGO, Calif.— The UC Riverside Women's Tennis Team opened the Fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule this past weekend as the Highlanders visited San Diego for the 2018 ITA Southwest Regionals. UCR gathered four wins in the tournament including three from brand new faces to the Highlander team.
The first win came from Tracy Van in the main singles draw on opening day as the senior gave UCR its first victory of the season dropping junior Petra Such of Cal State Fullerton in straight sets of 7-6, 6-4.
The next Highlander triumph would come the following day in the consolation doubles round as the team of freshmen Lindsey Gelinas and Natalie Shamma took the court for just the second time as a pair. The two UCR rookies would earn their first collegiate win as they edged out the Grand Canyon duo of Mathilde Lirzin and Ludovica Infantino 7-6.
Gelinas would keep her momentum taking two singles wins on back-to-back days following her and Shamma's doubles success. The freshman would battle back from a first set loss against Big West foe in CSUN's Skyla Alcon to earn her first singles win 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, before defeating Ellie Ashley of San Diego State in straight sets of 6-2, 6-2.
The Highlanders will now head to the Jack Kramer Club Collegiate Invitational from Thursday, November 1st to Sunday, November 4th for their second fall tournament.
