RIVERSIDE, Calif.— Despite trailing 2-1 Saturday night, the UC Riverside Women's Volleyball emerged victorious over Cal State Fullerton for the second time this season edging out the Titans 3-2.
The Titans got out to a quick start taking the 1st set 25-23, but the Highlanders would find their rhythm in the 2nd as UCR put together a 5-0 run to take a 16-13 lead.
Both teams would trade points until Cal State Fullerton held set point at 24-23, but sophomore Yuliya Ushakova would ice the match with a cross-court kill and the Highlanders would score two more to take the 2nd set 26-24.
The Titans would regain the lead taking the 3rd set 25-19, putting the Highlanders in a must-win situation.
UCR would rise to the occasion owning the 4th set jumping out to an 8-3 lead and never looking back as the Highlanders went on several runs to take the set 25-17 and force a 5th set decider.
With momentum from the 4th, UC Riverside opened up the final set on a 9-1 run burying Cal State Fullerton. The Titans would show their efforts scoring four straight with the Highlanders holding match point, but eventually fell short as UCR emerged victorious 15-9.
Senior setter Chelsea Doyle had another tremendous outing with a match best 51 assists and 18 digs, but the Highlander attack was once again led by the underclassmen. Ushakova and freshmen Ashlyn Blotzer, Christina Escamilla, and Marissa Holt combined for 52 of UCR's 67 kills.
Blotzer bested her career high for the second straight match adding 14 kills and Ushakova led the way with 16. The Highlander defense was led by sophomore Nicole Rodriguez who had a match-best 20 digs.
The Highlanders will now head to Northridge this Tuesday to take on the Matadors.
