Riverside, Calif.—In a hard-fought battle with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Friday night, the UC Riverside Women's Soccer team (10-0-2) came away with a 0-0 draw in double overtime. The team is now 1-0-1 in Big West Conference play.
"It seems like every time conference comes around, it is tight," head coach Nat Gonzalez said. "These eight games are all that matter."
The Highlanders had difficulty getting many offensive chances in the first half due to the counter attack of the Mustangs (1-9-4, 1-1-1), but come the second half, the team turned it up. It had 13 shots in the second half, eight of which were on goal.
The team was led on the attack by Maddie Feist, who had nine shots on the night, six of which were on goal. Feist has had a flair for the dramatic this season, recording five game-winning goals, she just couldn't get one to hit the back of the net on Friday.
Overall, the team had a total of 22 shots, 13 of which were on goal. Cal Poly had 11 shots, five of which were on goal.
"I'm proud of the effort," Gonzalez said. "I look at them and say, 'We did everything right, we just couldn't score.' I really am proud of them."
Tied for the best start in program history at 10-0-2, the Highlanders know that opponents come in gunning for them.
The difference between this game and the 10 wins so far this season ultimately came down to execution. However, Gonzalez is confident his team will respond when it plays on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara at home.
"Them walking away from this game with a tie, I think we will be fine on Sunday," Gonzalez said. "It wasn't a loss, but we know how much better a win would have been and will look to do that on Sunday.
"I can't guarantee the result, but I can guarantee we will be in a good spot with that kind of effort. We left it all out there."
