FULLERTON, Calif.- The UC Riverside Women's Volleyball Team (6-10, 1-4) earned its first Big West win Saturday night as the Highlanders defeated Cal State Fullerton (6-12, 0-5) 3-0 in sweeping fashion. Each set between the Titans and the Highlanders was close as UCR took the match 22-23-22.
Both teams were evenly matched on both ends as Fullerton took the kill battle 43-42 and UCR led the defensive competition out-digging the Titans 63-61.
The 1st set was locked at 8-8 until the Highlanders grabbed seven straight to go up 15-10 and eventually take a 1-0 lead on a 25-22 opener.
The middle set was back and forth for the duration of the competition until UCR found a 20-15 lead and never looked back taking its 2nd set 25-23.
The Titans fought hard in the 3rd as they overcame Highlander leads on three different occasions to ice the final set at 21-21, but UC Riverside would hold on for the sweep taking the set 25-22.
The Highlanders spread out their attack as sophomore Yuliya Ushakova earned a match-high 11 kills and freshman Nailah Jones and junior Reilly Bosworth collected 10 and 9, respectively. Senior Chelsea Doyle set her teammates up all night collecting 31 assists.Â
UC Riverside will look for its 2nd straight victory this Thursday when the Highlanders visit UC Davis.
