STILLWATER, Okla.--The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team finished a tough three-game road trip on Sunday with a hard-fought 76-51 loss to Oklahoma State.
The team began the game with a 5-0 lead, but as the contest wore on, the Highlanders had a hard time finding the bottom of the net as Oklahoma State switched between man and zone defense.
The Cowgirls began and ended the second quarter on a 9-0 run and the Highlanders were never able to recover, going into the locker room at halftime down 37-19. UCR shot 2-for-14 from the field in the second quarter and finished the game shooting 37 percent.
The physicality and size of the Cowgirls was hard for the Highlanders to match. Oklahoma State had 28 points in the paint and 23 offensive rebounds, along with 21 second chance points.
Keilanei Cooper and Jannon Otto were the standouts in Sunday's game. Otto had 20 points (8-for-17) with four rebounds and three assists, while Cooper tallied 17 points (6-for-11) with four rebounds. Cooper even had a long three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first quarter.
The Highlanders had just four free throw attempts the entire game, while Oklahoma State went 15-for-17 from the line.
The team may have a 0-3 record to start the season, but it hasn't been without some bright spots. UCR has had different student athletes step up in each game.
On Tuesday vs. USC, Malou Thiebaut De Kergret led the team with 17 points coming off the bench. Against BYU on Friday, in which the team took a heartbreaking 72-70 loss in overtime, Marina Ewodo had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Tianna Eaton had 18 points and nine rebounds.
UCR will play its first home game of the season on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Southern Utah.
