Los Angeles, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team (2-1) took another shutout victory in its opening weekend of play, defeating the Maryland Terrapins (0-3) by a final score of 5-0 at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Highlanders were dominant on both sides of the diamond with senior pitcher Tayler Misfeldt throwing her second shutout in back-to-back days. Against the Terrapins, the veteran Highlander pitched a complete game, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 9 batters for the second game in a row.
This impressive performance earns Misfeldt her second win of the season and the 39th of her career. She is now just one win away from tying the UCR all-time record.
UC Riverside got the bats going in the second inning to take an early lead as the team put together a two-out rally.
Sophomore designated player Sarah Parten reached first based on a single up the middle that set up an RBI triple for senior catcher Jenae Lockwood on a 2-2 count. With a 1-0 lead, sophomore first baseman Karter WIlliams stepped to the plate and hit the second pitch she saw over the left field wall to give her team a 3-0 lead.
The Highlanders would add two more runs in the sixth and seventh inning to extend their lead to 5-0. With the bases loaded, senior Jenna Curtan walked to score an unearned run by junior Hannah Rodriguez. The final run would come from freshman Raena Robinson, who capitalized on a Maryland error to notch her first career run.
UCR will take a 2-1 overall record into Sunday, when it will close the weekend with back-to-back games against Middle Tennessee and tournament host UCLA.
The match with Middle Tennessee is set for 11:30 AM at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. The battle with the Bruins will follow at 4:30 PM.
