Softball Defeats Army 10-0 to Start Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

Cathedral City, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team (4-3) kicked off the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday morning as the Highlanders defeated the Army Cadets (1-5) 10-0 in 5 innings of play.
Sophomore pitcher Haley Marschall (1-1) had a nearly clean slate from the circle in her shutout win allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out 2.
The Highlanders got off to another quick start at the plate scoring 6 runs in the first 2 innings.
After getting the first two batters aboard in the top of the 1st, junior Hannah Rodriguez would score senior Jenna Curtan from 3rd on a groundout to 2nd base. Junior Brittney Garcia was the next to bat bringing in sophomore Emma Ramelot and reaching first on an error. 2 at-bats later Garcia would reach third and then home on a wild pitch to put UCR up 3-0.
The Highlanders would get going again in the very next inning of play as they again got their lead-off hitter aboard. Sophomore Danielle Ortega drew a walk and would advance to 3rd base on 2 wild pitches. Freshman Seanna Garewal would bring her in with a double to left-center. Curtan was next up hitting a double of her own to the same left-center gap and scoring Garewal from 2nd. Curtan would then steal third base and advance safely home on a throwing error to take a 6-0 lead.
UC Riverside did its most damage in the 4th inning as the first three batters up all singled to load the bases with no outs. The runners would advance on a wild pitch bringing in Ortega from 3rd base and a walk by Ramelot would load the bases again. Rodriguez would single to left field advancing each runner and scoring Garewal to increase the lead 8-0. A single through the right side by Garcia would bring in another run and the Highlanders would earn their 10th run of the day on a sacrifice fly from junior Amanda Lynch.
Jenna Curtan had an outstanding day for UCR going 2/2 with a double, 3 runs, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base.
With a 10-0 lead, the game was called in the 5th inning.
The team's next matchup will be on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM against Stanford.
