UCR Baseball Drops Saturday Doubleheader at Washington

Seattle, WA – The UC Riverside Baseball Team (2-4) fell in both games at Washington (4-2) on Saturday, dropping the first game of the weekend 8-0 before falling 5-2 later in the day.

GAME 2
The Highlanders jumped out to a promising start in the day's final game, as redshirt senior shortstop Colby Schultz knocked a double to right field with one out in the top of the first. A Husky error would eventually bring Schultz home for the Highlanders' first run of the day, making it 1-0.

Unfortunately for UC Riverside, that would be its last run for a while. Washington scratched for the first time in the bottom of the fifth, when it exploded for four runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Huskies would score their final run of the day one inning later, extending their advantage to 5-1.

Needing four runs to get even, junior first baseman Ian Nowak opened the top of the seventh with a single to second base, making it four straight games that he has recorded a hit. Soon after, senior second baseman Cody Sporrer would make his way to second, advancing first on a fielder's choice and then on a passed ball.

Redshirt senior catcher Tony Gudino then singled to right field to bring Sporrer home and cut the deficit to 5-2. That was Gudino's second RBI of the year and his first since the Highlanders' season-opening win over Washington State.

The Highlanders ended the game with 7 hits, led by Schultz (2) and Gudino (2). Schultz now has four multi-hit performances in just six outings so far this season.

GAME 1
After having Friday's game canceled due to weather, UCR would get its first shot at the Huskies early Saturday afternoon. However, the Highlanders were held without a hit for the first time this season, giving up eight runs and tallying one error.

Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with two runs on a single by senior KJ Brady. The Huskies would end up having their biggest offensive inning in the fifth, as they put up four more runs on three hits to make it 6-0.

Two more UW runs in the sixth would make it 8-0, as junior right-handed pitcher Joe Demers closed things out with 9 strikeouts in nine innings.

NEXT UP
UC Riverside will close its three-game series with the Huskies tomorrow. The weekend's final game was initially scheduled for 1:00 p.m., but has been moved up to 12:00 p.m.
