Riverside, CA – The UC Riverside Athletics Department completed one of its most successful academic quarters in recent years, posting a 3.02 cumulative GPA across the Highlanders' 17 athletics programs.
In all, 13 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 in the fall 2017 term for the Highlanders, while 79 posted GPAs of 3.50 or higher (26% of our population), 130 earned a GPA of 3.2 or higher (43%), and 160 boasted a 3.0 or higher (54%). In addition 60 student-athletes made the Dean's list in the fall (20%).
The Men's Tennis Team had the highest GPA of the Highlanders' 17 athletics programs with a 3.35. Women's Cross Country followed closely at a 3.34.
"As focused as we are in athletics on success in the fields of competition, it is the university's academic mission that truly drives us," UC Riverside Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tamica Smith Jones said. "To that end, the fall of 2017 has been a resounding success. Our director of student-athlete services, Michelle Almazan, and her staff have done a tremendous job working with our student-athletes this year, and our student-athletes responded in kind."
"My congratulations go out to all of our Highlanders who excelled in the classroom this fall, and I look forward to celebrating similar successes throughout the remainder of the 2017-18 academic year."
Under Michelle's guidance, the Athletics Department completely overhauled its academic program this year, reclassifying the traditional roles of some positions while reallocating funds to allow for the hiring of several new positions.
The increase in staffing and additional academic services hours have given the academic department an ability to service more students through weekly academic support meetings and tutoring appointments. As a direct result, the amount of hours that UC Riverside student-athletes are utilizing the tutorial and study hall services in recent months has doubled.
The Highlanders also improved their partnerships with the campus' Academic Resource Center, the Honors Department, and the Career Center, which helped them increase access to quality tutors and life skills programming for the student-athlete population.
"Although academic success is ultimately up to the individual, academic support for our athletes is a collaborative effort embraced by many departments at UC Riverside," Almazan explained.
"The student athlete services department relies on the continuous accountability and support of its coaching staff, and appreciates all the efforts made from the College Advisement offices, Academic Resource Center, the Honors Department, and the Career Center in their partnerships for our student athletes, as well as the support of our Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Walter Clark."
Â
In addition, UCR faculty play the most vital role in the success of all our students as they teach and guide them. "Thank you to all the faculty who respond to our academic inquiries by providing the department with key details to aid in the success of our student athletes," Almazan said.
