Baseball Drops Nevada 9-3; Splits Doubleheader

Reno Nev.– The UC Riverside Baseball Team (10-9) split a doubleheader with Nevada (9-7) Sunday afternoon after having the previously scheduled games canceled due to inclement weather. The Wolf Pack took the first game 3-0, but the Highlanders answered with 12 hits in the 2nd game to win 9-2.

GAME ONE
The Wolf Pack took an early lead in the first game as they scored a run in the first inning  and would add two more in the 6th to take the game 3-0.

After a shaky start in the 1st inning, sophomore pitcher Trenton Toplikar settled in allowing just one hit over the next four innings, while striking out three.

UCR threatened Nevada in the top of the 5th stringing together a couple of hits in a two-out rally to get runners aboard. With the bases loaded, senior Colby Schultz faced a full count but drilled a pitch to the left fielder and ended the inning.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders responded to being shut-out with an offensive clinic in game two where the team registered 12 hits to take a 9-2 victory.

UCR scratched first taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th. Junior Yeager Taylor would put a ball in play to score junior Dean Miller and advance sophomore Connor Cannon. Cannon would then come around for UCR's second run on an RBI single by junior Anthony Lepre.

The Wolf Pack would cut the lead 2-1 scoring in the bottom 5th, but the Highlander's offensive efforts would shine in the next inning.

Taylor would get the top of the 6th started scoring Schultz from 3rd on an RBI single. Lepre would then add his 2nd RBI of the day on another single to score Cannon and put UCR up 4-1.  With the bases loaded freshman Nathan Webb drew a walk to bring another Highlander across and a double to right center from junior Justin Mannens would clear the bases and give the Highlanders an 8-1 advantage.

UC Riverside in back in action this Tuesday as they will travel to Fresno State to face the Bulldogs. The game is set for 6:05 in Fresno, CA.
UCR added its final run of the game in the top of the 9th as senior Cody Sporrer reached on a fielder's choice and drove in a run.

Lepre had an outstanding afternoon from the plate going 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.

Freshman pitcher Cole Percival lead the defensive efforts for the Highlanders getting the start and the win and allowing just one earned run, five hits, and three walks.
