Greensboro, N.C.— The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team (10-12) opened up its seven match road trip splitting a doubleheader with North Carolina A&T (0-17) and Campbell (9-6). The Highlanders defeated NC A&T 5-2 before falling 4-3 to Campbell.
NORTH CAROLINA A&T
The Highlanders got a leg up early in their first dual match of their east coast road trip defeating the Aggies in the doubles round to take a 1-0 lead.
The duo of
Nabil Abdallah and
Anderson Ju was the first off the court sweeping their opponents 6-0. UCR would then earn the clincher on court two where the team of
Filip Engstrom and
Kyle McCann took a 6-2 win.
UCR's success would continue in singles play as the Highlanders sealed the match winning three of the first four singles matchups.
Frehsman
Pawel Jankowiak was the first to finish winning 6-1, 6-2 on court one and fellow freshman
Vignesh Subramanyan followed with an dominant 6-0, 6-1 win on court six. Abdallah's 6-4, 6-3 win on court four added another straight set victory for the Highlanders and gave them the overall match.
McCann grinded out a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win on court three to give UCR a 5-2 victory.
CAMPBELL
The match with the Camels was a battle as the Highlanders found themselves down 3-0, but would mount a comeback and nearly tie the match. UCR added three singles wins, but was edged out in the end 4-3.
The Camels started the match taking the doubles point and the first two singles matchups as well to take a 3-0 lead.
Subramanyan kept UCR alive with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court six and McCann followed with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory to cut the Campbell lead 3-2.
The Highlanders were in need of two more wins, but the Camels sealed the match with a win on court four. Engstrom would add the final win of the day in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory making the final score 4-3 in favor of Campbell.
UCR is back in action with another doubleheader on Tuesday against Methodist and Chowan.
