RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Riverside (4-7) closed out its first three-game home stand of the year with a 1-2 record, as it dropped both Sunday games in its doubleheader against San Francisco (6-4), 2-1 and 4-1.
GAME 1
The Highlanders fell 2-1 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Senior Cody Sporrer recorded UC Riverside's sole RBI of the day to score a run for junior Justin Mannens in the bottom of the eighth, but it wasn't enough, as the Highlanders finished with three hits to the Dons' five.
Mannens scored the Highlanders' only run of the game – and his fourth of the season – after reaching base on a triple to right field earlier in the eighth. It was Mannens' first multi-base hit of the year, and the Highlanders first triple of 2018.
Freshman pitcher Cole Percival (1-1) gave up just four hits, picking up five strikeouts and tallying 70 strikes on 97 total pitches.
The top of the third was the only inning that San Francisco was able to score in, picking up two runs on three hits.
GAME 2
In the series finale later in the day, UC Riverside would score a run in the bottom of the eighth for the third straight game, but couldn't match San Francisco offensively in a 4-1 defeat. The Dons finished with an 11-4 advantage in the hit department, as both teams recorded two errors apiece.
USF's third hit in the top of the eighth was a two-run single, essentially icing things by putting the visitors up 4-0. The Highlanders scratched for the first time in the game shortly after that.
After leading off and reaching second on a double down the left field line, freshman Nathan Webb would score his fifth run of the year, advancing home on a single up the middle by junior Dean Miller with two outs on the board.
That hit gave Miller a team-leading 14 hits for the season. His seven RBI are second only to sophomore Connor Cannon (10).
The Dons' first two runs came in the top of the first, as they capitalized on a pair of UCR errors while recording three hits to get off to a quick start out of the gates.
Pitchers Kevin West (0-1) and Jared Noonan tied for the team-lead with three strikeouts, giving up zero earned runs in seven combined innings pitched.'
The Highlanders will remain at home for their next six games, beginning with Valparaiso this Tuesday and Wednesday. Both games are set to begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Plex.
