Riverside, Calif.- The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team won its second straight match this week after defeating Boston University 4-3 Wednesday morning. It was a close competition as the match came down to
Vignesh Subramanyan on court six for the second straight day. The freshman would again emerge victorious giving the Highlanders their third win in five matches.
"I feel that this could be the turning point of our season," said Head Coach
Mattias Johansson. "We haven't played up to our complete level yet, but we played with a lot of confidence in the matches against Youngstown and Boston."
In the doubles round, the freshman duo of
Pawel Jankowiak and Subramanyan took a 6-4 win on court one, but the Highlanders would drop the doubles point to the Terriers.
UCR would again need four singles wins to take the overall match and four Highlanders would again step up for their team.
"The key for any team is to play your match and be able to put yourself in a position to win," Johansson said. "The fact that we have freshman doing this for us in the beginning of the season is truly valuable."
Jankowiak was the first off the courts with a straight set 6-1, 6-1 victory on court one to tie the match at 1-1. UCR would quickly gain the lead as junior
Kyle McCann won on court three 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
The Highlanders would grab another point on court four, but Boston retaliated winning courts two and four.
The match would come down to Subramanyan on court six as the freshman won the first set 6-1, but was edged out 7-6 in the 2nd. With both teams standing on the sidelines in support of each their teammates, Subramanyan would clinch the match for the second day in a row winning 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.
"It's unbelievable that [Subramanyan] is a freshman, but he has a very strong mind and it feels very good that he has been the clincher," said Johansson. "I wasn't even worried at all, I trust him, so it was great."
UCR's next match is set for Saturday at 10 AM against Villanova at the SRC Tennis Courts.
