UCR Sets Div. I Record with Nine Doubles in 9-2 Win Over Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Looking for a bounce-back victory in Saturday's second game, UC Riverside (14-15, 4-4) went off for nine doubles on 18 hits, giving Hawaii (19-12, 5-3) little chance from the outset in a 9-2 win.

The nine doubles set a new Division I record for the Highlanders, who had previously reached 8 on several other occasions.

Senior shortstop Colby Schultz went 4-of-6 four season-highs of four hits and two doubles, tallying a run and an RBI. Junior Matt Hardy also finished with two doubles, going 3-of-4 with a run and two RBI.

Outfielder Nathan Webb continued to shine in his freshman season, finishing 3-for-5 with a run of his own. He now has a hit in each of his first eight Big West games, and has doubled on 13 of his 25 hits this season.

Brenden Avventino opened the scoring in the top of the first, scoring on a Cole Pofek single to right field.

The Highlanders didn't let up in the top of the second, adding four more runs to take an early 5-0 advantage. Webb and Hardy scored first on an Avventino double. Avventino would then score on a double by Schultz, who closed the inning with his sole run of the day on a single by Anthony Lepre.

UCR added one more run in both the third and the fourth to make it 7-0. First to score was Dean Miller, giving Hardy a sac fly RBI. Next, Connor Cannon scored on another RBI single from Lepre.

After Hawaii answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, the final runs of the day would come in the top of the ninth. Dylan Orick brought Pofek home with a single down the right field line, and Orick would put the icing on the cake by later scoring on a Hardy ground out RBI to shortstop.

The Highlanders put up 18 hits for the third time this season. Freshman Cole Percival (5-1) had seven strikeouts, just one shy of his career-high.
