RIVERSIDE, Calif. – On a hot and humid Sunday afternoon, UC Riverside (15-19) wasn't able to keep pace with San Jose State (16-22), falling to the Spartans by a final score of 14-3.
The Highlanders finished with 10 hits from nine players, giving them an average of 10 per game over the weekend series. Junior Anthony Lepre went 2-for-3 to lead the way. He now has a hit in four straight games, a run which includes three multi-hit outings.
UCR's three runs on the day came with the game already in hand for San Jose, as the Spartans scored three runs in four different innings.
Redshirt sophomores Adrian Garcia and Houston Naucler entered as pinch hitters in the bottom of the seventh, immediately providing some late life with back-to-back doubles. Naucler's double to left field gave him his first career RBI and brought Garcia home for his first run of the season. Garcia's hit was also the first of his career.
In the following inning, Cade Peters would strike with his first home run of the season to right field, bringing home Yeager Taylor to cut what had been an 11-0 deficit to 11-3. However, the Spartans would close out the game with another three runs in the top of the ninth.
Freshman Robert Cruz singled in the bottom of the eighth for his second hit both in the last three games and in the season. Freshman Dylan Orick also hit a single up the middle in the second. He now has a hit in five of his last six appearances.
UC Riverside will play one more non-conference home game this Tuesday against San Diego State before resuming Big West play at UC Santa Barbara from April 27-29.
