Softball Wins 6th Straight Defeating CSUF 4-2 in Game One

The UC Riverside Softball Team (33-20, 10-9) won its 6th straight game Friday night as the Highlanders downed the Big West's top ranked team, Cal State Fullerton (31-23, 16-3) 4-2. UCR shined offensively under the lights of its first night game, broadcasted on ESPNU, as the team collected two early runs and out-hit the Titans 6-3. This 6-game win streak matches the season best by the Highlanders.

Hailey Dolcini got the start in the circle for UCR and did not disappoint tossing a complete game and only allowing three hits and two runs to the Titans, neither of which were earned. The freshman pitcher made timely pitches all night striking out eight batters and leaving six runners stranded.

The Highlanders took an early lead getting the first three batters aboard and scoring two runs in the 1st inning. Senior Jenna Curtan lead-off the game with a walk and was moved to 3rd on a Hannah Rodriguez double. Sophomore Emma Ramelot then stepped to the plate and delivered a bouncing single through the left side of the infield to drive in the UCR runners and give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.

UC Riverside would add another in the top of the 3rd as senior Jenae Lockwood roped a one-out triple and was brought in a ball put in play by fellow senior Chelsey Holley giving her team a 3-0 lead.

The Titans remained scoreless until the bottom of the 6th inning where they added two on a couple of UCR miscues to cut the lead 3-2.

The Highlanders would strike again in the top of the 7th to add some insurance for Dolcini as crafty base-running from Curtan distracted the Titan defense and allowed sophomore Danielle Ortega to touch home. This would be the final scoring effort by either team as UCR would hold on to win it 4-2.

Jenna Curtan had a perfect night at the plate going 1-for-1 with three walks and scoring the Highlanders' first run of the night. Emma Ramelot collected two RBI on the night and Hannah Rodriguez continued her hit streak adding a double, an RBI, and a run. UCR scattered its six hits across six different players.

The Highlanders are back in action tomorrow as they close out the regular season with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 PM at the Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, CA.
