LOS ANGELES, Calif.— The Highlanders continued their postseason perfection Wednesday afternoon as the UC Riverside Softball Team (37-22) won its 4th straight playoff game downing Eastern Kentucky (44-20) 9-6 to open the NISC Championship.
In UCR's first postseason appearance, the team holds a 4-0 record and has outscored its opponents 28-7.
Senior Tayler Misfeldt started the game for the Highlanders and despite not facing every batter, pitched a complete game only allowing four hits, three runs, and zero walks while striking out nine. The pitcher improved to 20-11 on the season, which is one win shy of her career best record of 21 set her sophomore season.
UCR kept up its hot streak at the plate outhitting the Colonels 12-7 and got on the scoreboard first with a six-hit, four-run 3rd inning.
The Highlanders loaded the bases on three straight singles to open the 3rd and Head Coach Nikki Palmer went to her bench bringing in junior Amanda Lynch to pinch hit. Lynch did not disappoint knocking an RBI single to right to give UCR its first run of the game. Sophomore Danielle Ortega and senior Jenna Curtan would add RBI singles of their own and freshman Seanna Garewal drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Highlanders up 4-0.
EKU answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the 3rd to cut the lead 4-1.
Garewal struck again in the 5th singling to center to drive in sophomore Karter Williams and stretch the lead to 5-1. The freshman left-fielder had a perfect day from the plate going 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBI, and a run.
The Highlanders would cap their scoring efforts in the 7th as Curtan added another RBI single and sophomore Emma Ramelot put her team up 9-1 with a three-run bomb over the left field wall. A different Highlander has now homered in all four postseason games.
The Colonels added five runs in the bottom of the 7th to cut the lead but UCR would hold on to win the game 9-6.
UCR will now face host LMU tomorrow at 12:30 PM. The Highlanders and Lions met earlier this season at the Titan Classic in early February where LMU took a 3-2 win.
