LOS ANGELES, Calif.— A historic and unforgettable season came to a close Friday afternoon as the UC Riverside Softball Team (38-24) took 2nd place at the NISC Championship. The Highlanders fell 5-0 to host LMU, but took home a NISC Regional Championship and made it to the final day of competition in their first postseason appearance.
UCR piled on five wins in NISC competition and outscored its opponents 35-15. The Highlanders also earned two shutouts including a 10-0 run-rule win over Nevada and a 2-0 win over regional host UNLV.
In the final game of the season, senior pitcher Tayler Misfeldt took the circle for the last time in a Highlander uniform tossing six innings and allowing just two hits and one run through the first five innings of play.
In the postseason, Misfeldt was a rock for the Highlanders boasting a 4-2 record in her six starts and collecting a dominant 2.00 ERA with 41 K's. She leaves UCR as a the all-time wins and strikeouts leader and plans to pursue a professional career this summer.
Senior Jenna Curtan added UCR's only hit on the day and was an offensive force in the Highlanders' seven postseason games earning a .381 batting average, a .519 OBP, five runs, two doubles, and five RBI. Curtan leaves UCR as the all-time hits, runs, and doubles leader.
LMU added an early run and four in the 6th to secure the game.
Seniors Jenae Lockwood, Misfeldt, Curtan, and freshman Seanna Garewal all took home hardware making the All-Tournament Team in the championship round.
