
Amarasekara Takes 4th to Lead Highlanders at Big West Championship Multis

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Sophomore Dilini Amarasekara took fourth place with a score of 4,902 at the Big West Championship Multis, held this past Friday and Saturday at the Matador Track & Field Complex. That was the best finish out of a contingent of four Highlanders competing in Northridge, securing five team points for her team.
Women's Heptathlon
Amarasekara posted well-rounded scores across the board in the Women's Heptathlon, including a trio of top-three marks. She was at her best in the 200m Sprint, recording the second-fastest time at 24.89 seconds. She also took third in the High Jump (1.67m) and the Long Jump (5.59m).
Seline Schinke ended her weekend in 12th-place overall with a score of 4,184. The freshman sent her very first effort in the Javelin Throw 37.40m, good for second-best in the field. She also took 9th in the 800m Run (2:32.24) and 10th in the High Jump (1.49m) and Shot Put (9.07m).
Men's Decathlon
Sophomore Aidan Olvera and freshman Jose Castellon represented the Highlanders in the Men's Decathlon, with Olvera taking 11th-place overall with a score of 5,779.
Olvera shined in the 1500m Run, finishing in the top half of the leaderboard with the sixth-fastest time of 4:53.33. He had three other top-10 finishes, including taking eighth in the Javelin Throw (47.65m), ninth in the Pole Vault (3.72m), and 10th in the Discus Throw (31.56m).
Castellon completed four events, taking 13th in the 110m Hurdles (16.85s) and 16th in the 100m (12.02s), Long Jump (5.64m) and Shot Put (9.26m).
Next Up
The Highlanders will carry the full force of their roster into the final weekend of the 2018 Big West Championships next Fri-Sat, May 11-12, back in Northridge.
