RIVERSIDE, Calif.-- A standout golfer during her four years at UC Riverside, 2018 alumna Hannah Facchini is ready to play the biggest tournament of her life.
Hannah will compete in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in Kingston Springs, Tenn. starting Aug. 6 after finishing as co-champion with a round of -3 (69) in the qualifier at Victoria Club in Riverside last month.
"This is the first real championship I have qualified for," Facchini said. "I am a little nervous, but it is really excitement more than anything.
"I have been trying to qualify for the tournament for a really long time and had never been able to. It didn't hit me until we were making traveling arrangements. It is all just happening so fast. We are going to be ready for it."
While Hannah's mom plans to join her in Tennessee, she will also have Highlanders Women's Golf head coach, Mary Ritchie, by her side. Coach Ritchie will also act as her caddie.
"This means so much to our program on so many levels," Ritchie said. "She has been a part of a program that has broken so many records, including advancing to the NCAA postseason for the first time. To want to have me continue to be a part of her game after her college career is very exciting and gratifying.
"On the course in competition, I typically have five players to coach and I do so in short spurts with each player. Now, I can focus entirely on her."
Since qualifying, Facchini has been watching YouTube videos and aerial tours of the course. She's already taken detailed notes on the yardage of each hole and is keeping an eye on the weather, especially the humidity.
"This is the highest amateur event you can play in," Ritchie said. "Not only that, this gives the university visibility because it will be televised."
