Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Beats Houston to Improve to 5-0

Riverside, Calif.--Just five games into the UC Riverside Women's Soccer season, Maddie Feist is doing things very few have done before her.

Sunday night at home against the University of Houston was another example. In the 85th minute, Feist belted a shot that found the net on an assist by Kyra Taylor and Miah Conde to give the Highlanders a 1-0 win. It marked her fourth goal of the season.

After the game, Feist was on the field with a group of her friends who had made a sign with her name and No.10 on it.

"It's pretty exciting, especially since it is my last year here. I'm happy to be making such a big impact my senior year, Feist said.

"I've been pretty comfortable taking shots from that distance and when I realized no one was stepping up, I decided, what do I have to lose?"

The Highlanders are now 5-0 to begin the season. However, the team has had to find a different way to win each game. On Sunday, Houston did a good job of taking away UCR's ability to defend. They just kept flicking the ball away, never allowing the team to get close enough to score. It took halftime for the team to adjust.

"Every time we are successful and win, someone is going to come in and have a different tactic in how to stop us," head coach Nat Gonzalez said. "At the end of the game, I was very proud of them. You have to be okay feeling uncomfortable at times."

Things are clicking both offensively and defensively for the Highlanders. During this streak, goalkeepers Laura Perjanik and Annie Bailey have combined to allow no goals.

The Highlanders will go on a two-game road trip next week, playing Seattle on Sept. 7 and Idaho on Sept. 9.

"It is exciting and promising going forward, but we are just going to keep our heads down and look for the next competition," said Feist.
