TUCSON, Ariz.— The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team capped off its season opening road trip Sunday afternoon falling 6-1 to Arizona. The Highlanders finished the weekend with a 2-2 record sweeping both Arizona-Ottawa and Arizona Christian.
"Our guys competed well today against the toughest opponent we saw this weekend," Head Coach Mattias Johansson said. "This early in the season I am looking less at wins and losses and more at how we fight in each match, but I'm proud of the team because going 2-2 on the road is tough to do. Hopefully we can bring the same intensity in our home opener this Friday."
The Highlanders came out strong in doubles as the duo of senior
Kyle McCann and sophomore Fillip Engstrom held a lead on court one, but the Wildcats would battle back to take a 1-0 overall lead with wins on each court.
In singles play, sophomore
David Ramirez was a true bright spot on the day winning just his second career match and spoiling the Arizona sweep. Ramirez competed on court five downing Carlos Hassey in three sets 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 10-8.
Freshman
Andreas Whelan-Merediz also had a good showing on court six battling to take the second set but ultimately fell 3-6, 6-4, 5-10 to Stewart Block.
The Highlanders will now return home to take on Air Force this Friday.
