SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The UC Riverside Women's Tennis Team completed its season opening road trip Sunday afternoon as the Highlanders faced the Aztecs of San Diego State. UCR showed life in the doubles round behind its strong court one duo, but the undefeated Aztecs would take the match 7-0.
SDSU opened doubles play taking courts two and three by identical scores of 6-3, but the team of sophomore Tia Elpusan and junior Sara Khattab would find success on court one. The Highlander pair battled and bested the Aztec team of Jenny Moinard and Shakhnoza Khatamova 6-4 to give UCR a win on the day.
In the singles round, Elpusan and freshman Natalie Shamma collected a set a piece as both fought in three set matches. With the overall match over the two Highlanders would play a third and final tiebreaker set. Both players would compete but were ultimately edged out but two points. Elpusan finished 3-6, 6-3, 9-11 on court two and Shamma finished 6-3, 3-6, 8-10.
The Highlanders will now return home for their season opener this Friday against Hope International. The match will be the first of a five-match home stand.
