Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Highlanders' Second Half Struggles End with Home Loss to Cal Poly

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Thursday night, just eight days after the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team (8-15, 2-5) earned its largest margin of victory in a conference game, the script was flipped as the Cal Poly Mustangs (5-14, 1-5) evened the series with a 71-45 win over the Highlanders.

"This is the nature of Division I basketball," Head Coach David Patrick said. "You can't take any games off. You have to show up every night or you're going to get beat. I told our guys that this team wasn't going to just roll over and they came in ready to play today. We have another good team coming in on Saturday so now we have to make sure we show up then."

After leading for most of the first half, the Highlander offense began to slow down allowing the Mustangs to surge to a 28-25 half time lead. The Highlanders' drought continued in the second half with the team shooting just .318 from the field and Cal Poly never looked back scoring 43 second half points.

Freshman Callum McRae was a lone bright spot for UCR collecting 10 points and five rebounds to notch his fifth straight game in double figures.

The Highlanders held strong inside on the defensive end allowing just 26 points in the paint and blocking a total nine shots, which is the third most in program history, but Cal Poly would make its mark from distance hitting on 9-of-14 threes in the second half alone.

UC Riverside will now look to bounce back staying at home to host UC Davis this Saturday night.
