Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Highlanders Can't Overcome Early Goal by UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif.— It was a tough day up north for the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team as the Highlanders could not overcome an early goal by host UC Davis. The Aggies would add a second goal late in the match as a result of the late offensive push by the Highlanders, to take the match 2-0.

UC Davis improves to 3-1 in Big West Conference play with today's victory, while UCR falls to 1-3. The Highlanders have yet to find a win on the road since their Crosstown Showdown victory early in the season, but will have the advantage of hosting its next two contests at home with CSUN and Sacramento State.

The Aggies got going in the 9th minute with what would be the game-winner, as Kristian Heptner avoided defenders before firing in his fifth goal of the season.

The UCR defense would then do its job keeping UCD out of the net for most of the match, until the final minute where they made a jail-break push, needing to net the equalizer. In doing so, Adam Mickelson would get a steal in the Highlander's third, and take the ball coast-to-coast to score on an empty backfield for the Highlanders.

The shot battle would go to UC Davis 17-8, with the Aggies putting six on frame and the Highlanders landing five.

Senior keeper Edwyn Gutierrez earned another start between the posts and collected four saves. The teams eight shots were spread among seven different players with sophomore Issa Badawiya collecting two.

The Highlanders next match is set for Wednesday, October 23, as the team hosts CSUN at UCR Soccer Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 PM.
