MALIBU—The UC Riverside Men's Tennis Team returned to the courts this past weekend at the ITA Southwest Regional at Pepperdine University. After an impressive first tournament at the Bulldog Fall Classic, the Highlanders battled against some adversity and faced some tough opponents this past weekend.
After receiving a bye on his first round of the consolation bracket, senior Gilbert Chung competed against his opponent SDSU's Alex Scemanenco. Chung was able to push his match to three rounds putting up a fight, but unfortunately falling 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(6).
Chung would draw an extra match the next day and redeem himself with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 over SDSU's Arnaud Restifo.
In round thirty-two in the consolation bracket for the Highlanders, senior Nabil Abdallah put up a tough fight in his final match. The Highlander battled in the first set, falling 6-3, but lost his second set 6-0. In that same round, senior Max Cohen did not go down easy, challenging LMU's Ethan Prost, who ended up reaching the final of the consolation bracket. Cohen pushed the match to three sets but the final ended up as a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6) defeat.
Cohen was also able to gain some experience on the doubles end of the bracket for UCR with his doubles partner David Ramirez, as did Abdallah and Chung, but both would fall in the first round.
