SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On Friday night, the UC Riverside women's soccer team put up its highest away goal total of the season at UC Santa Barbara, but it wasn't enough as the Gauchos struck late to steal a 3-2 win.
The back-and-forth affair featured a pair of equalizing goals from a resilient Highlander side, which falls to 3-13-1 overall and 1-6 in Big West play. Santa Barbara improved to 8-4-5 overall, 4-1-2 conference as it went unbeaten for the fourth straight outing.
Defenders Amanda Roy and Kieren Ritter put away their first scores of the season, each coming with the Highlanders trailing by a goal. After UCSB jumped ahead with a goal in the opening minutes, Roy's equalizer came in the 33rd, taking a pass from Miah Conde and slotting it past Gaucho goalkeeper Evann Smith to tie things at 1-1.
Following another goal from the home side 15 minutes out of the halftime break, Ritter would quickly find an answer for UCR, equalizing less than two minutes later. Another great feed by Conde would set up the sophomore Ritter in great position to dink it past the keeper and make it 2-2.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders, UCSB would be the last to find the score sheet, as Lynsee Voss scored with just over five minutes remaining to give the Gauchos the win.
Sophomore defender Natza Marin was also awarded an assist on both UCR goals. The Highlanders tied their season-high with two goals for the second time in three games.
The Highlanders will be back on the road for tomorrow's regular season finale at Cal Poly at 2:00 p.m.
