Highlanders Swept by No. 19 Hawai'i

RIVERSIDE—The Highlanders fought hard against the Big West's top team Sunday afternoon but could not pull off the upset as No. 19 Hawai'i defeated UC Riverside 3-0. UCR looked strong in the first and third sets holding a lead and battling the Rainbow Wahine, but UH would claim the match 25-19, 25-11, 25-17.

With this win Hawai'i improves to 22-3 overall with a conference record of 12-2, while UCR falls to 6-18 on the season and 2-11 in Big West play.

UCR held its own in the opening period finding itself tied at 16-16 but a 9-3 run by the Bows gave the visitors the 1-0 lead. The second set was all Hawai'i which opened the set taking a 17-5 lead and never looked back. Set three was a closer contest with each team trading points until the scoreboard read 13-13, but again UH would surge and take a 12-4 run to victory.

Junior Kat Lowry led the way with eight kills and also picked up two solo blocks and two block assists. Freshmen Amarachi Osuji and Isabella Scarlett followed with six kills a piece with Scarlett swinging at an efficient rate of .625. Senior Morgan Kline paced the defense with 13 digs.

The Highlanders will now hit the road for the final time this season playing a pair of matches on back-to-back days. The Highlanders will see UC Irvine for the second time in 10 days in a Friday night matchup before seeing Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon.
