Highlanders Edged in Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Facing crosstown rival Cal Baptist in what would end up being the highest scoring match of the season, the UC Riverside women's volleyball team battled back before falling just short in a five-set thriller, 27-25, 25-23, 24-26, 27-29, 21-19.

The Highlanders are now 6-21 overall on the year, while the Lancers move to a 14-16 mark.

For the second time during Big West play, four Highlanders would reach double-digit kills. Ayla Fresenius (19 kills, 14 digs), Kat Lowry (13 kills, 4 blocks), and Isabella Scarlett (11 kills, 8 blocks) all made contributions on both sides of the ball, but it was the hot hand of outside hitter Amarachi Osuji that led the way on offense. The freshman led all players with a career-best 25 kills, also adding 12 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces in her first double-double performance since the Highlanders' conference opener.

While four sets required extra points to be settled, all five were decided by just two points. Riverside got out to a slow start offensively, but enjoyed strong hitting outings in sets two (.316%) and four (.341%).

In the fifth and final game, both teams traded points until the Lancers took control with five unanswered to snag an 8-3 lead. As they did all night, the Highlanders fought back to tie it on several occasions, taking the lead for match point at 16-15 on a kill by Fresenius. CBU would take three of the final four points to take the set, 21-19, on back-to-back kills by Sydney Marks.

Setters Dejah Dade (39 assists, 4 blocks) and Morgan Kline (24 assists, 9 digs) combined to help UCR dish out a season-best 74 assists, its highest total in at least five years. The Highlanders also set season-highs in points (99) and kills (78) and added a conference-best seven aces.

UCR will close out the season this Saturday on Senior Night when it hosts the Aggies from UC Davis.
