Otto Scores 21, Ewodo Flirts With Triple-Double In, 79-68, Defeat At Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, UT— The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team got 21 points from Jannon Otto to lead four players in double figures, but was knocked off at Southern Utah, 79-68.

Marina Ewodo flirted with a triple-double logging 14 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to go along with three blocks and a pair of steals. Her all-around effort resulted in her second double-double of the season. 

UC Riverside (3-9, 0-0) posted season-highs in field goal percentage (.484), shots made (31) assists (19) and blocks (9). They also scored 48 points in the paint, a season-high mark as well. 

"It was nice to see our offense start flowing again. I thought we did a great job sharing the ball tonight." said Head Coach Seyram Bell. 

Southern Utah (6-3, 0-0) remained unbeaten at home for the year thanks to 26 points from Shalyn Fano and 24 from Rebecca Cardenas in the win.

The game turned in the third quarter when the Highlanders went on a 8-0 run to establish a seven-point advantage, 46-39. The Thunderbirds responded with a 15-2 spurt of their own to go into fourth period with a, 54-48, lead. 

Southern Utah opened the final period of play with a, 15-0, run over a four-minute span to make it 69-48. UCR did cut the deficit to 12 (72-60) with 2:23 to play, but simply ran out of time as the game would end, 79-68.

The Highlanders head east for the final stop on their bicoastal three-game swing, a Sunday matchup at VCU slated for a 10am PT tip.
