Gnago Remains In Double Figure Form, But Highlanders Fall At VCU, 67-51

RICHMOND, VA— In their third and final game of a seven-day bi-coastal road trip, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball team was defeated, 67-51, at VCU.
Daphne Gnago led the way for the Highlanders with 14 points on seven-of-11 shooting, her second consecutive game in double figures. In the four games prior, she tallied a total of 18 points, never eclipsing five in any contest.Â
UC Riverside (3-10, 0-0) struggled with the VCU (5-7, 0-0) press, committing 27 turnovers. Coming into the Sunday afternoon matchup they were averaging a manageable 16 turnovers per contest over their last five games.Â
"No matter how well your offense may be working, it's difficult to win when you lose out on that many possessions." said Head Coach Seyram Bell.
The Highlanders trailed by 16 (36-20) at the half, after a second period that saw them shoot 3-8, commit 11 turnovers, and get outscored 21-8.Â
UCR and VCU played were in second half scoring, with each posting 21 points in the third period and 10 in the fourth. The Highlanders closed to within 10 late in third, but the Rams responded with six-straight points to close out the quarter and take their 16-point advantage into the final 10 minutes.Â
"We played much better in the second half, but that hole we dug ourselves in the second quarter… it was too much to overcome. We'll learn from it." added Coach Bell.Â
Jannon Otto also posted double figures with 11 points and six rebounds to go with four assists. Marina Ewodo added eight points, while pulling down a game-high seven rebounds.Â
LOOKING FORWARD
The Highlanders take a break for the Christmas holiday. They'll look to close out 2019 with a "W" on New Year's Eve vs CSU Bakersfield in a tip-off slated for 2pm in the SRC Arena.
