Softball Sweeps Second Day of USD Tournament

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team (3-1) grabbed the momentum from its bounce-back win yesterday and pushed it in to day two of the season as the Highlanders swept their doubleheader at the USD Tournament. UCR opened with a 6-2 win over host San Diego before besting Marshall 5-4 in an evening rematch that was nearly halted due to time of day. UCR has now won three straight and will close out the tourney tomorrow looking for its fourth in a rematch with the Toreros.

SAN DIEGO
Jacy Boles (1-0) stepped into the circle to open the day fo competition for the Highlanders and did not disappoint. The junior pitcher would give up two runs in the first inning before settling in for a complete game five strikeout performance that earned Boles her first win of the season.

After falling behind 2-0, the Highlander offense ignited for three runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead. With the two outs, the Highlanders rose to the occasion as freshman Haylee Kela and senior Hannah Rodriguez got aboard and RBIs by junior Danielle Ortega and senior Brittney Garcia gave UCR a 3-2 lead.

From there the Highlanders never looked back playing perfect defense and adding three more runs over the course of the game to take it 6-2.

Garcia would finish 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ortega went 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI, and two runs.

MARSHALL
After falling to Marshall in the season opener just over 24 hours prior, the Highlanders would tame the herd in the rematch besting the team 5-4 to earn its third straight win.

Due to extra-inning affairs in the tournament, the game would not begin till 9 PM, but the Highlanders were poised to fulfill their shot at redemption.

Unlike the matchup with the Toreros, it was UC Riverside that got out to quick start in the second game with the team opening with a two-run first inning.

Hannah Rodriguez, Danielle Ortega, and freshman Moana Pisia found themselves loading the bases before any outs or hits were recorded, and Brittney Garcia would make the most of the opportunity taking a base on an HBP that scored the first run of the game. Junior Emma Ramelot would bring in the second run on a fielder's choice to give UCR a 2-0 lead.

Ramelot would give the team another run in the fourth scoring on an error, but Marshall was not finished notching its first run of the game to cut the lead 3-1.

In the sixth inning, Ramelot would strike once more crossing home with senior Amanda Lynch to give the Highlanders a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Herd would fight hard adding three more in the sixth, but junior Haley Marschall's complete game performance was too much for Marshall and the Highlanders closed out a 5-4 win.

The Highlanders only recorded three hits in the game, but heads up base-running and strong defense led the team to its third straight victory.
