Baseball Splits Double Header With Nebraska

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—While Friday's season opener against Nebraska took place under dreary skies and a chance of rain, Saturday's double header for the UC Riverside Baseball team had plenty of sunshine. That enjoyable atmosphere continued into the rest of the day when the Highlanders picked up a 10-9 victory in the first game. However, the team couldn't get a win in the second game, losing 10-6.

The four-game series will wrap up with a 10 a.m. start at the Plex. The game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m.

GAME 1

The Highlanders wasted no time getting on the board, scoring four runs in the first inning. It started with four straight singles, including a two-run single by Dean Miller.

The Highlanders got some help in the fourth inning thanks to an error by the Cornhuskers third baseman and a wild pitch. The team plated three runs, two of which were unearned.

The Cornhuskers threatened in the sixth inning down 7-4 and already having scored one run. With Aaron Palensky at the plate and runners on second and third, he belted a ball to left field that looked like a sure hit that would score two runs.

Instead, left fielder Cole Pofek got a great jump and made a leaping catch to his left to end the threat. The dugout went crazy and Pofek got plenty of high fives as he made his way back to the dugout.

Nebraska wouldn't go away without a fight. With the Highlanders up 8-7 in the eighth, the Cornhuskers got a leadoff walk and then a double off of the left field wall. After a strikeout, Jared Noonan allowed a RBI single, but then was able to get an 4-6-3 double play.

A day after the Highlanders used five relievers, starter Riley Ohl was able to go five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He also struck out four and walked three.

GAME 2

In what had been the case for the first two games of the series, the first few innings of Game 2 were relatively quiet. Both team were held scoreless over the first four innings. Then, things changed.

With a heavily taxed bullpen, the Huskers got to the Highlanders in the sixth inning and then the eighth, that included a combination of Trevor Bateson, Alec Arnone and Cole Tucker. However, three of the six runs allowed were unearned.

Shamus Lyons, making his first career start for the Highlanders, went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He also allowed three walks, but struck out five in the loss.

Three of the six runs were put up in the ninth inning in the hopes that the team would be able to make a comeback. Two of the runs in the inning were unearned.

Ari Gerber, who didn't start either of the first two games, went 2-for-4. Nick Kafer and Nathan Webb each had two hits. A total of seven different Highlanders had hits in the game.
