Softball Falls 2-0 to LMU

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Saturday morning was a defensive battle for the UC Riverside Softball Team, as the Highlanders fell 2-0 to Loyola Marymount on the second day of the Stacy Winsberg Tournament. A nine-hit pitching duel between a UCR rookie and an LMU veteran would come down to just one inning of scoring to give the Lions the edge.

Just two batters into the Lion lineup, freshman Megan Casper would enter in relief and held her own tossing six innings and allowing just two runs and five hits, while striking out five. After coming into a game with two runners aboard and zero outs, Casper retired the next five batters to keep the game tied. Unfortunately the Highlander offense could not find its rhythm getting shutout for the first time this season.

LMU would do all fo its damage in the bottom of the third inning grabbing two hits and two runs to take a lead that would go unchanged.

UCR nearly countered just a half inning later in the top of the fourth with its first hit of the game and threatened with a runner heading home, but the Lion defense preserved its lead.

The Highlanders' four hits were spread out as four UCR vets in seniors Hannah Rodriguez and Brittney Garcia, and juniors Emma Ramelot and Danielle Ortega collected singles on the day.

UC Riverside will look to end the tourney strong tomorrow as the team is set to face Fresno State and UCLA.
