Softball Drops Sunday Doubleheader

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The UC Riverside Softball Team capped off the Amy S. Harrison Classic Sunday afternoon with a pair of tough matches as the Highlanders fell 6-1 to UNLV before battling with Portland State and ultimately falling 6-5.

UNLV
One inning would be the story of the battle with the Running Rebels as UNLV notched a five-run fifth inning to separate themselves from the Highlanders.

The pitching effort for UCR was accomplished by committee with junior Melanie Olmos earning the start and both freshman Megan Casper and junior Jacy Boles making appearance. Boles would close out the game for the Highlanders with an impressive performance allowing just one run in her 3.2 innings and striking out a career-high eight batters.

The Highlanders trailed 6-0 in the seventh, but never quit as junior Emma Ramelot hit a sac-fly to bring in freshman Haylee Kela from third for the first run of the game.

The Rebel defense would close out the game taking it 6-1.

PORTLAND STATE
The matchup with the Vikings was a different story as after falling behind, 5-1 the Highlanders mounted a huge comeback landing late-inning punches and giving themselves the opportunity to take the game.

Melanie Olmos was a true offensive standout in the second game of the day going a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Her first came in the 5th inning where the Highlanders trailed 6-2 and an Olmos double brought senior Brittney Garcia around to score. The junior would strike again in the bottom of the seventh with two-outs singling to extend the game, knock in junior Emma Ramelot, and cut the lead the just one.

Junior Kayla Curtan would provide a spark for the Highlanders as well crushing a home run over the center-field wall to give UCR some much needed momentum. The catcher's jack is her first in her NCAA DI career.

Again three Highlanders would see the circle with a impressive inning coming from senior Rebecca Faulkner, who also earned the start at DP. In just her second appearance of the season, Faulkner entered in the seventh and retired the three out of four Vikings, two of which came by way of strikeout.

UC Riverside will now look to next weekend's tournament, the UCR Classic, which features UTEP, Sacramento State, and Cal Baptist.
