Baseball Gets 5-3 Win at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX--The UC Riverside Baseball team shook off a walk-off loss to San Jose State on Sunday and came back to beat a talented Grand Canyon team on Tuesday in a 5-3 win.

The Highlanders (3-6) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the first inning. A double by pitcher Connor Cannon, followed by back-to-back walks, loaded the bases for Yeager Taylor, who promptly singled up the middle.

UCR plated another two runs in the second inning thanks to a few miscues by GCU. Jacob Shanks reached on an error to begin the frame, before a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Dylan Orick. He then quickly doubled to left center field, scoring another two runs and giving the Highlanders a 4-0 lead. Both runs in the inning were unearned.

Cannon got the start for the Highlanders, his first of the season. He went two innings, allowing one run on two hits. The one run he allowed came on a solo home run to Cuba Bess in the second.

Head coach Troy Percival then used a handful of relievers to get the win. Abbott Haffar went 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Both of those runs scored on wild pitches.

Hayden Petrovick didn't allow a hit in 1 1/3 innings and wound up getting the win, while Jared Noonan allowed two hits in two innings of work.

After getting the first two outs of the eighth inning, Noonan allowed a single and then a walk to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However, he got out of it on a groundout to first base.

Percival then called on freshman Alec Arnone to seal the deal and get his first save of the season. He allowed a leadoff single, before inducing a groundout and then striking out back-to-back hitters to secure the victory.

The team will now face Cal Baptist in a three-game series beginning on Friday at home. Saturday's game will be played at CBU, while Sunday's will be back at the Plex.
